The Blackstone-Millville Youth Basketball League (BMYBL) crowned Division Champions this past weekend. In Division 3 (Grades 5&6) action we witnessed the Blackstone Lions coached by Chuck Dunton run past the Millverville Men’s Club 35-23. This game was close for the first 10 minutes, but then the Lions started pulling away and never looked back. Leading the charge for the Blackstone Lions were Joey Dunton, Sebastian Ryan and Alexa Lemieux. Dunton finished the game with 14 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 block shots, getting it done on both ends of the court. Ryan, manned the middle as the big man pulled down 14 boards to go along with 2 blocked shots. While Lemieux, playing her first year of organized ball, at one point hit 4 consecutive shots to finish the game with 9 points, 11 rebounds and 2 steals. The Millerville Men’s Club was led by star point guard Nick Vinacco. Vinacco finished the championship game with 15 points, 6 rebounds and a blocked shot. Nick had help from teammate Sean Tasker who pulled down 11 boards.
In Division 2 (grades 7 & 8) action we saw the previously undefeated Blackstone Smoke squad get upset in the final minute of the game by a scrappy, never say die, George’s Breakfast gang. In this highly competitive match, the Smoke’s jumped out to a commanding 12 point first half lead and appeared as if they were going to win going away. However, George’s hung tough and shaved that lead down to 8 points by halftime. During the 2nd half two huge events derailed the Blackstone Smoke Shop team. First, their point guard with the amazing handle, Isaiah Andrade fouled out the game with 13 minutes of game time still to be played. Shortly thereafter, Justin Sauter, the starting center sprained his ankle which luckily did not stop him, but it did slow him down a bit. George’s Breakfast knew immediately that if they continued to play hard they could chip away at the Smoke’s lead. And chip away they did, when with 28 seconds left in the game they took a 1 point lead that they never relinquished while hanging on for an exciting 30-29 victory. In a game that featured more defense than offense it still had offensive stars to mention. George’s Breakfast , coached by Jim Laren, was led by Chris Kearnan’s 8 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocked shots, Point guard Wesley Trescott finished the game with 8 points and some nifty assists, while Jacob Dunton contributed with 11 boards and 2 steals. The Blackstone Smoke Shop team was paced by point guard Isaiah Andrade’s 13 points, 7 rebounds and a steal. Justin Sauter, gimpy ankle and all came up huge with a Bill Russell like stat line; 11 points, 23 boards, 5 steals and 3 blocked shots. Chris Chico had a solid game as well with 5 points and 13 rebounds.
In addition to the Blackstone Lions and George’s Breakfast winning the “in-Town” Rec. championships, the BMYBL 8th grade boys team participating in the South Central Massachusetts Youth Basketball league won the Division’s championship. Congratulations to Coach Mike Donahue and his talented group of hard working boys.
